Hokitika in Winter

Winter is one of the best times to visit Hokitika. Our weather is relatively settled and often days are clear and crisp with fresh snow on the mountains.

Wrap up warm and get outside. Enjoy many local walks, the West Coast Wilderness Trail, a game of golf at the scenic golf links, sunsets on the beach and for the adventurous, hunting. For a tamer experience, visit the many galleries and cosy cafes

The Cool Little Town

Hokitika offers the best small town holiday on the West Coast of the Southern Alps, New Zealand.

A wild beach, no traffic lights, awesome sunsets, mountain views, artisan galleries and great cafes and bars. Fun-filled holidays you used to have, but with better coffee!

Hokitika Gorge

Sometimes you see photos of a tourist spot and think yeah right, it can't look that good as that in real life. The Hokitika Gorge is one of those places.

The vivid turquoise water surrounded by lush native bush looks too good to be true...but trust us, it is a must do natural attraction on the West Coast.

The Luminaries and Hokitika

Birthplace of Pounamu

Before the gold rushes Maori were already heading here in search of another precious stone - pounamu.

As the birthplace of pounamu, also known as greenstone or New Zealand jade, Hokitika is a vital stop for anyone in search of their own piece of pounamu treasure with its many arts and crafts galleries.
